Sewing in Therapy: Creating Tangible Tools for Emotional Growth
This weekend, I worked with two siblings, ages 9 and 14, both struggling with the pain of a father who has seemingly chosen drugs and alcohol over his children. When parents abandon their kids, it hurts deeply, leaving scars that need to be identified, addressed, and worked through. Kids will often avoid discussing this issue, saying things like, “I don’t care,” “It doesn’t matter,” or “I don’t want to see him anyway,” but the reality is that abandonment leaves them feeling hurt, rejected, and unworthy. This avoidance of emotions can lead to unresolved pain, impacting their self-worth, relationships, and trust in others.
My mission and goal with every single kid who walks through my door is to empower them to have a voice. I accompany them on a journey to find their feelings, feel them, and process through them. Teaching a child to use their voice in a healthy and appropriate way not only gives them a tool for expressing their emotions, but also shows them that their voice matters. When children learn they can state their truth in an appropriate way, it empowers them in all aspects of their life.
The Uniqueness of Sewing.
Sewing is a powerful therapeutic activity that goes far beyond creating something tangible. The act of working with fabric and thread can symbolize piecing together emotions and experiences that are difficult to express in words. As your hands stitch, sew, and mend, the repetitive and calming motions can provide a sense of focus and mindfulness, allowing for self-reflection and emotional release.
Sewing can also build a sense of accomplishment and control, fostering resilience and helping to “stitch together” feelings of hope and healing. In therapy, it’s not just about the final product—it’s about the journey of creating something meaningful, one stitch at a time. Many of my patients, young and old, have found their pathway to healing through the activity of sewing.
